The Electrophysiology Lab, or EP Lab for short, is designed to treat patients who suffer from heart arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, with a treatment called ablation. This is an invasive procedure in which a catheter is guided to the inside of your heart. An energy source like unto heat is then sent through the catheter to ablate or destroy the heart cells triggering irregular electrical impulses. After this ablation procedure, most patients can then return to a more normal life free from their anti-arrhythmia medications.
In some instances, a pacemakers or intracoronary defibrillator may be necessary to control the heart arrhythmia. These devices are also placed in the EP lab to help control the heart’s rhythm. These devices monitor and regulate the heart and can also perform life saving Cardioversion in those patients at risk for possibly lethal arrhythmias.
Most patients stay overnight in our cardiac recovery area and go home the next morning following these procedures.
